The COVID-19 pandemic had a devastating effect in our society in more ways than one. Nevertheless, with many people staying at home, screen time increased a lot – and some of them indulged in sim racing. Indeed, Assetto Corsa just announced that their sales had surpassed the €100 million mark.

The game’s developer, Kunos Simulazione, was founded in 2005 with the goal of creating a leading simulator and Assetto Corsa went into early access on Steam in 2013, with the full launch coming in 2014.

Assetto Corsa haslong been available on consoles, but its more hardcore, online esports variant, Assetto Corsa Competizione, was long the province of PC gamers. Just last year, though, it was introduced to the PS4 and the Xbox too.

The publisher’s owner, Digital Bros, just welcomed Valerio Piersanti, a former Ferrari executive as President for Licensing and Assetto Corsa Partnerships.

“I am excited about this challenge and joining the Digital Bros group organization and I would like to express my gratitude in particular to the Galante brothers for the trust they have placed in me,” Piersanti said. “Assetto Corsa is a brand that I have had the privilege of following with Marco Massarutto since the beginning, through to the collaboration set up with Ferrari. Now the goal is to fully exploit the potential it has always shown, and consolidate its positioning and partnerships in a rapidly changing context.”

Indeed, last year Ferrari F1 driver Charles Leclerc became an ambassador for the Ferrari Driver Academy Hublot Esports Team, which was based on Assetto Corsa. With every sim racer seemingly gaining momentum through the pandemic, it will be interesting to see what impact it has on the world of racing once public spaces are safe again.
