BMW 4-Series Gains New M Performance Diesel And Carbon Fiber Roof

BMW was pretty busy last night as they introduced the 2022 M5 CS as well as new plug-in hybrid powertrains for the 3- and 5-Series.

That was just the tip of the iceberg as the company also revealed their spring updates.

The big news is the M440d xDrive Coupe will arrive in March with a 3.0-liter M TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder diesel engine that produces 335 hp (250 kW / 340 PS) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque. It will be connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission which sends power to an all-wheel drive system. This will enable the model – which also comes equipped with the M Sport package and an M Sport differential – to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 4.6 seconds.

If you don’t need to go that fast, you can save money by opting for the new 430d xDrive Coupe. Its 3.0-liter diesel engine produces a more modest 282 hp (210 kW / 286 PS) and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque, but it isn’t much slower as the dash to 62 mph (100 km/h) takes 5.1 seconds.

Besides the diesel engines, the 4-Series lineup receives an expanded color palette and additional upholstery choices. Furthermore, the M440i and M440d coupes – as well as the M340i and M340d sedans – can be equipped with a newly optional M carbon fiber roof.

Moving on, there’s a new 220i xDrive Gran Coupe which features a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 176 hp (131 kW / 178 PS). Thanks to a seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, the model runs from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 7.1 seconds.

The current 7-Series is sticking around and will now come standard with Integral Active Steering. Furthermore, vehicles equipped with a four-zone automatic climate control system will have a nanoparticle filter for even cleaner air.

Additional changes are limited, but M8 Competitions gain newly available M Carbon seats which are significantly lighter than the standard M sports seats. They feature power adjustment, heating, illuminated M8 badges as well as leather and Alcantara upholstery.

The M3 and M4 gain a new Skyscraper Grey metallic paint job, while the X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition can now be equipped with “BMW Individual Shadow Line lights in conjunction with the optional BMW laser light.”

Finally, there will be a BMW News app for models running Operating System 7. It allows owners to select their favorite news publications and have current events spoken aloud.
