2021 Mercedes-AMG G-Class 4×4² Trades The Wilderness For The Nurburgring Circuit

The Nurburgring isn’t the natural place where one would expect to encounter the new 2021 G-Class 4×4², but it is where Mercedes-AMG put it through its paces recently.

Spied on video, the truck showed some impressive cornering capabilities at the famous German circuit – well, ‘impressive’ for a big off-roader, with extra ground clearance over the regular G-Class models and portal axles.

We wouldn’t want to be in the shoes of the test driver, because if you pause the clip at the right moment (0:46 mark), you will see it on three wheels. And that looks pretty scary with a truck like this.

Now, you won’t have to squint to spot some of the characteristics of the G-Class 4×4², because the license plate reveals that it is actually the same prototype snapped arriving at the Nurburgring Test Center last week by our spy photographers. So, it sports the same widened fenders wrapped in vinyl stickers, more camouflage on the rear wheel holder, big side steps, steel bumper protection at the back, and roof rack with an integrated ladder.

The interior should gain a few upgrades too, like the different upholstery and trim options, and perhaps new graphics for the infotainment system and digital dials, although it has yet to open up to the camera, so this is pure speculation.

Power is understood to be supplied by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, but it is unknown whether it will be the ‘regular’ offering or AMG’s 577 HP unit. The official name of the vehicle is also unknown, yet it could be dubbed either the G63 4×4², or the G550 4×4² in North America and the G500 4×4² in Europe, like its predecessor.
