Opinions were divided when BMW launched the E90/E92 M3 back in 2007, with many concerned that the German automaker was losing its heritage in moving away from six-cylinder engines like the E46 and instead opting for a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V8. It didn’t take long for the doubters to be silenced.
Sure, the E46 M3 is often regarded by purists as the finest iteration of M car, but the E92 M3 is still a fantastic sports car to drive. It could also prove to be quite a good investment. So, should you buy one?
To see what it would be like to own a BMW E92 M3, YouTuber TedWard recently jumped behind the wheel of one. He doesn’t just drive the car, but also offers his thoughts on whether buying one is a good idea and provides an interesting insight into how, despite all of its appeal, owning a used M3 does have its drawbacks.
The 4.0-liter V8 of the M3 is good for 414 hp at a screaming 8,300 rpm and 296 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque at 3,900 rpm. Purists could order the M3 as standard with a six-speed manual transmission or, if they so wished, with an (optional) seven-speed dual-clutch ‘box.
Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels, with the M3 sprinting to 60 mph (100 km/h) in a touch under 5 seconds. Such an acceleration figure may not seem all that impressive in a world where sub-3-second 0-60 mph times are achieved by quite a few models, in the real world any car that can hit 60 mph in less than 5 seconds is more than fast enough – and the E92 is no different.
